Sunnyvale, California. KeraMed Inc. has agreed to license Network Medical Products Ltd., Coronet Medical Technologies Ltd., Angiotech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Surgical Specialties Corp. its proprietary double coil no touch technology for endothelial graft insertion under U.S. Patent No. 8,029,515 and associated pending patents. Network Medical is the manufacturer of the Tan EndoGlide, which is distributed by the other licensees for treatment of endothelial failure. The double coil no touch technology which is owned by KeraMed was invented by Yichieh Shiuey, MD, a cornea specialist and former Associate Chief of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. The unique technology allows the insertion of Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty Grafts through incisions as small as 3.5mm and is used in the EndoInjector manufactured by KeraMed. "It took many years of research to develop this technology. I'm extremely pleased that we could come to an agreement with these companies to use my invention to treat cornea blind patients throughout the world," said Dr. Shiuey.
KeraMed is an ophthalmic technology company devoted to providing minimally invasive treatments for corneal blindness worldwide. KeraMed is the manufacturer of the KeraKlear artificial cornea, which is the first commercially available non-penetrating artificial cornea designed for implantation into a corneal pocket. This device may be used when corneal graft tissue is unavailable or when corneal transplantation has a poor prognosis.
